About Me

I am the 44 year old father of a wonderful 18 year old son who is the center of my world. Watching him grow up is the most rewarding experience of my life. My son is, by far, the best thing that has ever happened to me.  I am proud to see how quickly my son has adjusted to college life; he started as a freshman at UT-Austin this year and he's LOVING it!

I attended Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, after high school.  I double majored in History and Political Science, was in the university band, was a proud member of the ΓΦ chapter of ΚΚΨ, was a counselor for at-risk kids in the Youth Opportunities Unlimited program, and was president of my dorm's student government association. I was graduated from SFA in 1991 with a BA and a teacher certificate. I taught 8th grade US History for one year in Houston and decided that I didn’t want to teach in public schools for the rest of my life. I moved back home to northeast Texas and became a cop.

I worked for my hometown sheriff’s office as a deputy until my patrol car was hit by an intoxicated driver in a pickup truck. I was banged up pretty badly -- it took seven surgeries over the course of about three years to put me back to (almost) normal. I have a titanium shoulder, elbow, and ankle now to remind me of my encounter with a drunk. I was lucky enough to meet a phenomenal orthopedist who saved my life and worked wonders on my shattered shoulder, elbow, and hand. I can’t even begin to say enough good things about him and his staff at OAD. He was a blessing when I needed one most.

My injuries were serious enough to make a return to patrol work not a feasible option, so I applied for and was hired as an instructor at the local police academy.  After nine years of teaching, I was promoted to deputy director there.  I currently hold that position; my duties include supervising adjunct faculty, handling technology issues, teaching, and working to maintain compliance with the state.

These days I love to travel, as you will discover from looking through the photos on this site. As you will soon see, my current obsession -- photography -- fits in nicely with my passion for travel. I have been bitten by the photography bug and I seem to take photos of everything I see. I hope to get better at it as time goes on. Through my travels I have been tremendously fortunate to make many wonderful friends all over the United States and Western Europe. As of now, I’ve visited the following countries: Mexico; Canada; the United Kingdom; France; the Netherlands; Germany; Luxembourg; Austria; and Belgium. I sincerely hope to expand that list as the years go by.

I have continued my education, too; I finished my Master's of Science degree in Criminal Justice Leadership & Management in December, 2011.  I am very proud of my degree — but I think I'm finished with school for a while.  I need a break!
